Here’s a great yo-yo video from Josh Yee and the guys at Rebel Yo-Yos. This was shot in the Occupy SF encampment in Justin Herman Plaza, but I’m not sure. If it’s related to the tweet below then it would be mid-october.

I always love doing my thing onstage at The Make-Out Room. I performed a yo-yo set at The Rumpus’s monthly event earlier this week and had a blast. I got to catch up with Unwoman, hear some cool stories, and yo-yo to a song from my Game Boy. Good times. I even kind of flirted with people… kind of.. But still, for me that’s a lot!

Above is a video from Evan Karp, who also recorded some of the other performers that night. Below is a cool photo collage that Rachel Resnick, who read stories from her book Love Junkie.

Later in the evening, I noticed Rachel standing near the stage with her legs crossed… and I took a picture which I later converted into a daily app experiment piece.

“ROCKstar VS Catalyst VS Super G” is a new yo-yo video staring Paul Han, Augie Fash, Gentry Stein, and Patrick Bogerding. The video was shot during this year’s Bay Area Classic yo-yo contest and features a hefty amount of Mission footage (including Dolores Park, Deli Up, and Cell Space).

I also should point to this old reality tv show that Paul, Augie, and I did hella years ago.

Black talks yo-yo at TEDxTokyo

I’m so happy to see a TEDxTokyo talk by my old friend, and yo-yo hero, Black. It’s a 5 minute talk about the usual “chase your dreams” stuff, followed by a 4 minute yo-yo presentation. Black is totally the man. He picked his stage character early on, and really sticks to it.

BAC yo-yo contest is this weekend

This weekend is the Bay Area Classic! I’m really stoked. The event starts tomorrow at Cellspace in the Mission, which will be for the 1 minute preliminary freestyles, with the big event happening in Washington Square Park on Saturday. I’m not entering or anything, but I should be at Cellspace a bit tomorrow hanging out. I’m going to try to fill a box filled with old yo-yo company shirts that I’d like to get rid of too.

For more information about the BAC events check out their site. Saturday should be a lot of fun to watch if you are interested. If I get the chance, I may bike to North Beach for an hour or two on Saturday to hang out:

Prelims will be held on Friday, May 13th from 10 am until 4 pm at CellSpace in the Mission district. Prelims will be 1 minute freestyles.

Finals will be held on Saturday, May 14th from 10 am until 4 pm at Washington Square Park. Finals will be 3 minute freestyle.

Frank from ILYY has just posted a new yo-yo video that features one of my iPhone songs off of Beeps And Smudges. The song, “Bad As They Seem” is a cover of an old Hayden song and also features Unwoman on vocals and fake cello. I love how the video turned out.

After a long wait, I finally own a decent gold plated yo-yo. When I say long wait, I’m not referring to the time I spent waiting for the yo-yo to arrive from Canada… nor am I referring to the time between when Steve, from SPYY Yo-Yos, and myself first started talking about gold yo-yos at the World Yo-Yo Contest…

I have been hunting for several years for a gold yo-yo that I would actually carry around with me as my daily throw. This gold plated Ronin isn’t the first gold plated yo-yo in my collection, but it’s certainly the most playable… and possibly the prettiest! Steve only had 4 of these yo-yos plate: “One for Doc, Ed, myself & eBay… Whenever I get around to putting it up for sale.”

Shortly after receiving this beautiful Ronin, I had lunch with my friend Sonny. Who filmed and posted this video of and my golden yo-yo in San Mateo on his new blog, YoYoSkoots.com. I look hella sloppy, but I had fun throwing!

the 7,000 pound yo-yo

Thanks to a recent post on YoYoFactory’s bloghole I learned about Beth and Tony Johnson, a Florida couple who recently attempted to break the World Record for largest functioning yo-yo. The Johnson’s spent 18 months creating this beautiful monster, which weighed 7,000 pounds and was 12 feet tall. Unfortunately, the giant yo-yo got stuck in a sleeper before it finally burned through the string and crashed to the ground (see the above video or click here if the video doesn’t show up in your RSShole).

The current world record for largest functioning yo-yo is held by a group of 7 Bay College students in Michigan. It weighs 1600 lbs and is 11 feet and 6 inches tall.

Yo-yo meetup in the Mission this Sunday

Just got word that there will be a yo-yo meet-up in Dolores Park this Sunday. I’m not really sure about all the details (and can’t figure out the site at all) but the flier says:

I guess this is one of Boxthor’s events? That’d be cool. I’ll be there either way. While on the subject, check out this beautiful platinum plated Anti-Yo on ebay! There are still two days left for bidding, and the proceeds go towards the California State Yo-Yo Contest.
