Ideas is my first 24 hour comic that I felt was good enough to print. It documents both my move to San Francisco and several events that took place at Comic Relief in Berkeley throughout the day.

Super Top

Super Top is the first comic I ever published and it is still my only entry into the “super hero” genre. It was originally printed in 2002 on a letter press in Minneapolis. The comic is embedded above, but is also available as a CBZ file, PNGs, or on the flickrhole.

When it was time to pick out which paper to print the comic on, I pointed to a box in the corner full of cardboard sheets asking “What are those?”
“Those are trash. They use them as filler when shipping paper. You can have ‘em.”
Although the sheets were fairly thin, we would crank the press to get the art to leave indentations.

The cover of Super Top is one of my favorites. I bought some boxes of “Hello My Name Is” stickers and we printed the comics cover in them, then applied them to the covers, ran some more art, the trimmed them. The cover of Super Top had 5 colors; brown, red, blue, white, & black!

Fun Fact, there were two alternate covers of this book. The retail cover had a blue sticker with red ink. The convention cover was a red sticker with blue ink.

About 1000 copies of SuperTop #1 were printed and sold. I only have less than ten copies left. In 2004 I write and drew 18 of the 20 pages for SuperTop #2. 5 years later and I still haven’t finished that damn book (which is sitting on my desk right now).

The Magic Yo-Yo (embedded)

As my “week of comics” continues, I’ve decided to (re-)post Oke Rosgana’s The Magic Yo-Yo. As mentioned previously, this comic was made by Rosgana as part of the 2009 24hr Comic Book Day from his home in Indonesia. I’m posting it today partly because I wanted to add to get it online as an embedded gallery, but mostly because The Magic Yo-Yo was a HUGE inspiration for my 24hr comic BOOF!.

For example: I wanted to make something that would hopefully be as for Rosgana to read as his comic was for me, so I decided to eliminate words so that the language would be more universal.

BOOF!

BOOF! is a strange little comic from this year’s 24 Hour Comic Book Day in SF. All 24 pages of story where written, drawn, and painted in one consecutive 24hr period. BTW, this is my first 24hr Comic since last year’s Robots Don’t Know Anything About Twitter.

Aside from the typical time constraints of a 24hr comic, I decided to add a couple more personal goals:
1. Story is told with images only (no text)
2. Create my first fully colored comic book
3. Format it for the iPhone screen
4. Keep it more serious than my typical comics

I have to say I’m happy with the end result. I really pushed myself into areas where I feel uncomfortable artistically. It’s not my favorite comic I’ve ever created, but I feel like some of the lessons I learned from working on it have stuck with me… for example, The Greatest Costume Ever story feels a lot like BOOF!

Aside from the embedded comic (above), I have all the pages up on Flickr… or you can download the BOOF! as a CBZ file or big ol’ PDF.

The Flatjack Incident

This comic book was created to accompany the first 250 Doc Pop sandwiches (sold at Ike’s Place in SF). The story is totally true. It happened at an IHOP in Seattle during the Mediocre Tour with Beefy and mc router. Beefy is the guy sitting next to me.
