Since then, thousands of people have called the number on the poster and been rick rolled by my pre-recorded message.

For just one weekend, back in January ’09, I forwarded all calls from my Grand Central/Google Voicemail to go directly to my cell phone… During this time, I personally treated every caller to a live rendition of Rick Astley’s classic song “Never Gonna Give You Up”. I filmed a few of these calls, but never got around to editing it all together until today. Enjoy the video.

A few weeks ago I helped out with the Science for Juggalos event in SF. We made several high school science fair style signs to bring to an Insane Clown Posse show later that night. I posted this large follow up post on Laughing Squid this morning… it’s full of videos and photos and win.

I couldn’t make it with the scientists to the ICP show, but I did have a chance to create an awesome googly eyed “Ask me about motherfucking eclipses” poster with my pal Reed Kennedy. I really like how it turned out, and now it’s plastered on the wall of Noisebridge.

Some people start new bands just because they like making up band names. I used to find shows for my band just because I loved making fliers. I was 17 when I started a band called God Damn Midget with my friend Matt. He liked the name because it had absolutely nothing to do with the type of music we played. I liked the name because I know it would look great on a flier.

We were one of the few electro-punk bands in Nashville and quickly developed an audience, but I couldn’t believe it when 103 KDF, the big rock radio station, asked us to do an interview on their hour long “local spotlight” show. We weren’t allowed to mention our band name, so Matt would always refer to us as “God Bleep Midget” while I would simultaneously say “Bleep Damn Midget”.

During the interview, the radio dj asked “Aren’t you guys afraid of offending anyone? Don’t your fliers get ripped down all the time?” to which I replied “Oh no, we just post them a little higher.”. She quickly cut to commercials and Matt and I looked at each other in shock.

That was the most punk rock moment of my life.

LOLcats, the first official music video from my newest album Me Geek Pretty One Day has been finally released. We shot the video on July 12th, 2008 on Quincy Street and the video magically finished production on July 12th, 2009. It was also a year ago that Dan caught this live performance of LOLcats at the Double Dutch in San Francisco.

In October of 2008, I took part in the LOLarts show in San Francisco. Despite all the cool press that came out afterwords, I haven’t written anything about the art show since this entry. So below is a video round up. Be sure to check out the Current TV piece which follows me around the week before the show. They asked me to make something while they were filming, so I made up the “missing invisible bicycle” flier on the spot.

Yesterday I was pleased to learn that the UK’s Guardian newspaper listed me as one of their favorite artists to follow on Twitter. Although the term “Twartist” isn’t all that flattering, I’m still really honored to have been included in such a prestigious paper. It’s probably the only time I’ll ever see my name printed next to Yoko Ono’s.

I know that the article is introducing a lot of new people who are interested in the art and social media, so I thought I’d write up a quick recap of some of my Twitter related projects from the last year.

Robots Don’t Know Anything About Twitter

This 24 page comic book was created in 24 consecutive hours using suggestions from Twitter. It wasn’t my intention to create a twitter comic, but after I started doodling a bunch of robots I sent out this fateful tweet. The responses began flooding in and I knew I wanted to dedicate each page in my book to as many different @replies as possible. RDKAAT is available as a free pdf, gifs, flickr set, and a physical book (directly through me). I am also watercoloring each page for a new online edition to go live in March.

The Failephant

There is something oddly bizarre about Twitter’s Fail Whale image. No other 404-error image has inspired so many people as this iconic image. When McCain temporarily suspended his campaign to “fix the economy” I knew this was an image I just had to make.

Fail Snails

The Fail Snails are part of my ongoing Memes In Real Life project, where I try to blend the lines between internet culture and everyday real life. Obviously, this is another one of my projects inspired by Yiying Lu‘s iconic Fail Whale image. For this particular MIRL project, I gathered nearly 60 snails from friend’s gardens and glued tiny orange birds (made from Sculpy) onto their shells, then released them all around the city to continue doing… um, whatever it is that snails do. For the record, this is the first time I’ve mentioned my Fail Snail project online. I was hoping to see if anyone else would discover these winged molluscs IRL, but since they haven’t, you can see all of my Fail Snail pictures here.

That’s just a small recap of my recent “twart” projects. I always have something up my sleeve, so please feel free to subscribe to the blog or follow me on Twitter for updates on art projects as well as anything else I care to write about. If you have any suggestions for future twitter projects or collaborations, I’d love to hear them. Please leave a video or text comment below or just @docpop me your thoughts. Danka!

Ladies and gents, I am a giddy Doctor Popular, for tonight my art will hang in the LOL Art show. It’s my first art show! LOL Art is a collection of meme related pieces created by artists from all over the world. Proceeds from art and ticket sales go towards Partners In Reading, an adult literacy foundation, but tix are already sold out.

Not many people could make it to the show, so I’m posting some of m pieces that have been accepted. A few of them are brand new, including the two different versions of the “Missing: Invisible Bicycle” fliers. The “No Invisible Bicycles” sign was a joint piece created by Star St. Germain and myself. Word.
